Reading – Idioms & Phrasal Verbs #3

My New Job

About 5 years ago, I had to take time off work to take care of my sick mother. It was difficult to get by and cut back on my expenses. I realized I would soon be broke if I did not come up with a solution. Luckily, my mother began feeling better and I could return to work. Jobs were a dime a dozen but I wanted a golden opportunity.

My first interview was terrible and I began having second thoughts. I did not have enough experience and I had to move on. I tried to look on the bright side and I kept my fingers crossed.

After a few days, a company called me about a great job opening. It was mind blowing. All I could think about was getting through the interview. This was my golden opportunity but I had to calm down and take it easy.

In a nutshell, I had a successful interview. I looked him in the eye and got straight to the point. I said that this was my golden opportunity and I would not let him down. He agreed with me.

My first day, I was nervous and I had to break the ice and get to know my colleagues. I did not want to make waves so I had to know who I can count on. After one week, my job was a piece of cake.

After 5 years, I ended up doing the interviewing for new employees. I have come a long way and I am on cloud nine.
